There Are Two Types of Horoscopes
When most people hear the word horoscope, they assume there is only one type.
But in reality, there are two major systems:
Heliocentric
Geocentric
If you've spent any time studying astrology, you've probably encountered these terms before.
However, many people still find themselves thinking:
"I've heard the names, but I don't really know the difference."
So in this article, we'll cover the fundamentals and explain the difference between Heliocentric and Geocentric astrology.
What's the Difference Between Heliocentric and Geocentric?
Let's start with the meaning of the names.
The "Helio" in Heliocentric comes from the word meaning:
The Sun
In other words:
A Sun-centered horoscope.
On the other hand, the "Geo" in Geocentric means:
The Earth
So:
A Earth-centered horoscope.
The names are quite literal.
What Is Geocentric Astrology?
This is the system most people are familiar with.
Geocentric astrology is based on how the planets appear from Earth.
When you look up at the sky from Earth, where do the planets appear to be?
That perspective forms the basis of the chart.
The astrology most people encounter—
magazine horoscopes
online chart calculators
traditional natal chart readings
—is almost always Geocentric.
So when people think of astrology, this is usually what they're thinking about.
What Is Heliocentric Astrology?
Heliocentric astrology takes a different perspective.
Instead of using Earth as the center, it places the Sun at the center and observes planetary positions from there.
In other words:
The Sun becomes the reference point instead of Earth.
Because of this, Heliocentric charts often look quite different from the charts people are used to seeing.
Many beginners encounter a Heliocentric chart and immediately think:
"What is this?"
But it is every bit as legitimate a horoscope system as Geocentric astrology.
Which One Is Correct?
A common question is:
"So which one is right?"
The answer is simple:
Both are correct.
Why?
Because they are looking at the same universe from different perspectives.
Imagine looking at the same house.
You can view it from outside.
Or you can stand inside and look around.
The scenery changes depending on where you're standing.
Heliocentric and Geocentric astrology work in much the same way.
They are simply different viewpoints observing the same reality.
What Can Each One Tell Us?
In general, many astrologers describe them like this:
Geocentric astrology
The individual
Daily life
Reality and personal experience
Heliocentric astrology
A broader perspective
Soul direction
Larger life themes
That said, interpretations vary greatly depending on the astrologer and the school of thought.
Different practitioners define these systems in different ways.
So for now, it's enough to understand one simple idea:
Heliocentric and Geocentric astrology are horoscopes viewed from different angles.
How I Personally Use Them
And this is where my own interpretation begins.
I don't read Heliocentric and Geocentric charts separately.
I always use them together.
Why?
Because I believe:
The completed form of your life is the Geocentric expression of a soul that has followed its Heliocentric nature.
To me:
Heliocentric astrology shows the soul.
Geocentric astrology shows the real-world version of you.
Put another way:
Helio asks: "How does the soul want to live?"
Geo asks: "What kind of person is that meant to become in reality?"
If you only look at Helio , you can understand:
What the soul wants
What it wishes to master
But you won't necessarily know:
What kind of person you're meant to become
Where that energy should be expressed in the real world
On the other hand, if you only look at Geo, you can understand:
Your talents
Your direction in life
What you're moving toward
But you may not understand:
How you're meant to walk that path
What inner attitude should guide you
The soul's motivation behind it all
At that point I found myself thinking:
"Why not combine the two?"
And that led me to a simple framework:
Helio = The Starting Point
Geo = The Destination
In other words:
Helio answers: "How should I move through life?"
Geo answers: "What kind of person am I becoming?"
By layering these two charts together, I believe we can understand our lives far more efficiently and accurately.
